Yuzu Shabu & Grill – Cerritos, CA 90703

With the cold weather lately I’ve just been finding myself wanting more soups to keep myself toasted. I’ve heard a lot of good things about Yuzu yet have not found the time to make it out to Cerritos. Yuzu is located in a very busy plaza along with 85 Degrees Bakery and popular. I do apologize for the poor quality photos but unfortunately the lighting inside the restaurant is definitely not picture friendly.

They offer tons of appetizers, as well as yakitori, and shabu. Want it all? Well you can make yourself a set which consists of bbq and shabu. I decided to just go with the short rib regular size shabu which offers 6 ounces of sliced beef. For my soup base I decided to go with their Sukiyaki, which is a sweeter soy sauce, however you can should a level of spicyness from as I chose spicy.

They offer options where you can add on additional items so I decided to choose the weird looking item which was their fish balls with roe and chose brown rice as my option. I didn’t like the fact that they added on extra costs to everything, even with the brown rice selection, other shabu places aren’t this nitpicky. Although I would have to say I loved their veggie bowl.

Yuzu offered so many different options whereas other places are limited. My bowl came with Napa cabbage, Kale, Bok Choy, Spinach, Carrots, Squash, Corn, Shitake Mushroom, Tofu, Ramen, & Udon Noodles. I love options so to be offered such a variety made me quite ecstatic. I would honestly suggest them slicing their meat thinner though, my meat was extremely thick and a bit tough.

Their short rib has been my least favorite, to be honest it just tasted like typical choice meat. The sauces they offer are a Taiwanese sauce which I personally did not care for, and your typical two other sauces which is the Goma(sesame sauce), and their Ponzu(Citrus Soy). My soup was base good, it had that sweet but spicy kick to it. Condiments offered were garlic, grated daikon, green onions, and chili oil. They did not offer freshly grinded sesame seeds which I love adding to my goma for a deeper flavor. Service could’ve been better although they were a bit busy.

My overall experience from Yuzu, honestly I’m not in a rush to go back, I would rather stay in South County and go to Mokkoji’s in Irvine as I believe they offer the best Shabu and it’s a lot closer!
